What are the requirements for an ASCII file?

Although most ASCII file types can be processed through Min-U-Script, there are few requirements such as page and line numbering that must be present. Here is a list of ASCII File Requirements and Helpful Tips.

  1. General Formatting rules include the following:
    • All non-ASCII characters must be removed from the file, i.e. Bold, Italics, Underlined text, Smart Quotes and Smart Apostrophes, Tables, Images, Superscript and Subscript.
    • Font spacing must be normal, NOT expanded.
    • Avoid different font sizes throughout the document. The recommended font and font size is Courier New 12pt.
    • Keep ALL margins consistent throughout document. Up to 65 characters of text per line is recommended.
    • File names should NOT contain any commas.
  2. Rules for NON-TESTIMONY pages:
    • If non-testimony pages do NOT contain line numbering they must have one of the following:
      1. Hard Page Break or Section Break – Create a hard page break between all non-testiomony pages.
      2. Have page numbers in the Header section on each page located at the top right of the page only.
  3. Additionally, if line numbers are NOT present on non-testimony pages avoid using Footers on those pages.
  4. TESTIMONY pages must contain both page numbers and line numbers and should be double-spaced.
  5. Line Numbers
    • Line numbers must be in the same position to the left of the text throughout the document. There must be at least one space between the line number and the start of the text.
    • There can be NO text contained in the line number position or to the left of the line number position on any line with the exception of timestamps. This pertains to all text including Headers, Footers and Non-Testimony Pages without line numbers.
    • Timestamps should be located to the left of the line number with at least one space in between the timestamp and the line number OR to the right of the text. Timestamps should not appear on NON-TESTIMONY pages.
  6. Page Numbers
    • Page numbers must be in the same position throughout the document, and must be located anywhere to the right of the line number position.
    • Additional Page Numbering rules/helpful hints include:
      1. Use right justification for all page numbers
      2. For best results locate page numbers at the top right of each page. If bottom page numbers are used ASCII must contain page breaks. Please note that page number location on final PDF document can be controlled from the Formats panel in MUS.
      3. Page numbers must appear without any symbols or text beside it. For example, page numbers appearing as  -1-, *1* or Page #1,  can NOT be used.
    • Keep page numbers on a separate line from headers or footers. Note: MUS can easily be formatted to add headers and footers to any document.
